One of the most popular scenarios that people attempt to “what if” is World War II. What if Pearl Harbor never occurred? What would have happened if the USSR somehow lost the Battle of Stalingrad? A new game announced today takes on that “what if” ideology with a supernatural twist.

Bringing the tabletop game Achtung! Cthulhu to PC, developer Auroch Digital announced their new indie title, Achtung! Cthulhu Tactics – The Forest of Fear, set to release later this year. Auroch Digital has begun a Kickstarter to aid the development of this new game.

In the world of The Forest of Fear, the Nazis have turned their fixation of the paranormal into reality, bringing the Lovecraftian creatures of the Cthulhu Mythos to fight the war.

Horror writer HP Lovecraft created “Cthulhu.” The story revolves around Cthulhu, a giant alien-like creature who is in hibernation in the South Pacific. His power is so immense that, even while he is asleep he can control people’s dreams. A long time ago, Cthulhu ruled the earth with allies and cohorts but has since fallen into a slumber. His cult of worshippers, even as split as they may be, yearn for the day that Cthulhu awakens and rules the planet once again.

The rise of these beings brings about ‘The Secret War,’ with covert allied forces fighting these monsters as World War II takes a turn for the horrifically weird.

Along with their Kickstarter campaign, publisher Ripstone is aiding in funding for this ambitious project.

“It’s a real honor to work alongside Modiphius and Ripstone on what will be a premium Cthulhu-mashup,” said Tomas Rawlings, Chief Commander at Auroch Digital. “Having worked with the Ripstone team before back in the PlayStation 3 days, together we made amazing strategy games, and I’m confident history will repeat itself!”

The tabletop game that inspired The Forest of Fear, Achtung! Cthulhu took its first breath five years ago as a Kickstarter project by Modiphius Entertainment. Since the release of Achtung! Cthulhu, Modiphius has left their mark with awards and accolades to boast their success.

There are a number of incentives for supporting their campaign, including copies of the Achtung! Cthulhu RPG or skirmish miniatures game, a chance to have your image immortalized into the game or even the chance to get a backstage look at the development and meet the team at their headquarters in Bristol, UK.

Achtung! Cthulhu Tactics – The Forest of Fear will feature Shoggoth-powered Panzers, HMG-armed investigators, mutated Nazi super soldiers, secret bunkers filled with mysterious research and alien artifact-powered wonder weapons.

For your viewing pleasure, I have included the original pitch video for Achtung! Cthulhu Tactics – The Forest of Fear below.
