During today’s Wholesome Direct Indie Game Showcase, Thunder Lotus Games announced Spiritfarer, an indie game set to be released this year.
Put simply, this is a game about death. As was explained during the Wholesome Direct stream, Spiritfarer has players taking control of a psychopomp named Stella who ferries the dead to the afterlife. To do so, players will undertake adventures that send them across seas.
Gameplay will revolve around management mechanics which will include mining, farming, harvesting, crafting, cooking and fishing. Fortunately, you will not have to go on the adventure alone. There will also be co-op play which will allow a friend to play as Dafodil the cat. The ability to customize your character and improve your raft will also add a personal element to each player’s adventure.
Despite the dark subject matter Spiritfarer promises to cover, the visuals are bright and colorful. The art style makes the game feel like a children’s fairytale. According to Thunder Lotus, it is based on “the Greek myth of Charon, whose duty it was to ferry the souls of the deceased across the River Styx.” As one would expect from a game centered on death, Spiritfarer will feature emotional moments and will ultimately teach you “how to say goodbye to your cherished friends.”
Spiritfarer will be available on PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One and PC.
