Boomerang X Flies Into the Fray Tomorrow

In first-person shooter games do you use a sword? A rifle? In Boomerang X you use a boomerang. Now hear me out, it’s not an ordinary boomerang and this is not an ordinary game. Boomerang X is an arena first-person shooter that emphasizes high-speed movement, control, and reflexes.

Developed by Dang! And published by Devolver Digital, Boomerang X will challenge your reflexes while you soar through the air. The game’s plot centers around the player finding themself on an island haunted by mobs of monsters. Finding a mystical boomerang that allows you to slingshot yourself to wherever it is thrown, you venture further into and under the island to purge the island of goo monsters.

Each encounter with the monsters takes place in spacious arenas. These arenas can only be completed by surviving waves of goo monsters. Boomerang X provides each arena with enough space to allow the player to fly around and target enemies from afar.  Each encounter involves hordes of goo monsters and specially marked ones that are required to be killed to start the next wave. New and more difficult enemies with different actions spawn as you journey further into the island. However, Boomerang X provides new abilities or upgraded shielding after each encounter. There seem to always be more arenas, more abilities, and more NPC’s along the way.

The core mechanic of this game relies on throwing and slingshotting the boomerang. Teleporting once it’s thrown increases your momentum. Doing that over and over can become extremely intense and fast-paced. It is exciting moving around so fast to maneuver around the monsters.  Playing the demo, I found myself having to pause the game twice because I lost the position of my character in the arena. Throughout my playthrough, the movement is extremely fluid. Never did I need to question in which direction I flung to while moving at high speeds. Who knew a boomerang could be a fierce and exciting weapon.

Devolver Digital and Dang! have a demo out to introduce you to the frenzy that is boomerang combat. Boomerang X is scheduled to release on July 8th which you can wishlist now on Steam and for the Nintendo Switch.
