‘Have Fun Dying’ is the tagline for Sockventure, Nighthouse Games’ first venture into video game development. Judging by the last trailer released — full of fast-paced action, split-second decisions and very nasty looking sawblades — it sure looks like it is going to be an incredibly appropriate one.
Sockventure is an action-adventure, precision-based 2D platformer that follows the story of Sockman — a sock-based superhero. You’ll be tasked with traversing a cursed washing machine that is somehow full of fire, lasers and spikes, to save a child’s favorite sock from being lost forever.
And it won’t be an easy task for the old Sockman. This game has 200+ levels, 7 chapters, 4 new movement skills to unlock (such as dashing, wall-jumping, double jumping and stomping), and even 20+ socks for customizing your very own sock superhero. That’s a lot of content, especially when you consider that the Finnish development team for Sockventure originally consisted of only two members. The group did end up growing to five people eventually, but that’s still a huge amount of work that’s been done by only a very small team.
The BIT1 2019 winners have even included multiple challenges to beat for all 7 chapters, as well as a ‘Dark World’ that’s unlocked by collecting coins throughout every level (for all you completionists out there). There are even online friend list and global leaderboards for the more competitive players, so you can see who’s the real Sockman.
Sockventure is set for release on Steam as early as next month, and if you’re a fan of games like Celeste or Super Meat Boy, then Sockventure looks like a great game for you to keep an eye on when it releases. If your interest has been piqued, you show your support by putting this game on your wishlist on Steam right now.
